Feedback from the kids

We went back to our usual Caravan with regular stalls happening after a long time of celebrations and hungama. After ages we had the dance stall and it felt good to be dancing again with the kids, although it wasn’t in full swing like before but we still had fun.The kids also enjoyed themselves. They danced their heart out.
The other stalls also took place simultaneously but since we did not have much stall preparations we could not come up with much activities to keep the kids engaged.
We had another round of evaluation with the kids. This time it was on an one-to-one basis. The volunteers had to personally go and talk to the kids.We more or less got a clear idea of what the kids feel.We also got to know a little about their personal problems at the caravan and what they expect out of the Caravan. Some interesting replies were, “We want computers to paint pictures and print them”!!
Some of the problems the kids face were more with the other kids.It seemed that the girls were having problem with some of the boys because they were being teased and hit by the boys. The kids enjoy coming to the caravan because the volunteers are very nice to them and the volunteers understand their problems. They find Caravan better than home and school because there is no one to scold or beat them here at the Caravan.
The kids have opened up to us more than we expected!!!

Seven weeks and still craving more

Its been seven weeks since I have joined the Tackle caravan and so much has changed since the first day I came to Nellurpuram. We have learnt how to bond with the kids,in fact our equation with the children has changed. We have grown as a team, the whole Tackle crew has become so close, and most importantly we ourselves have grown as a person mentally and emotionally. Its interesting how children can shape our personality. Its astonishing how I have changed from a restless person to someone who is more calm than usual. Just three hours spent with these kids in a week has transformed us.
Even after a tiring day in college,I find myself gravitating towards Nellurpuram just to spend time with these kids. Its like every Saturday the kids have a new story to tell. The kids eagerly wait for us to come. They have even learnt our names. Just to hear them say, “Hi akka” makes your day. They are always excited and enthusiastic about everything we have in store for them.

News from the Land I Belong!!

Right after college got over,I left for my second tackle event with the kids of A.Narayanpura. Thanks to the rain and the Saturday afternoon heavy Bangalore traffic jam I reached the place an hour late. When I was entering A.Narayanpura Government school,I was greeted with “hi akka” by all the kids. They didn’t even know me but they all smiled and said”hi”.

There were a total of 200 kids who showed up. First they had a game of lion and the lamb after which the kids were divided into the stalls of their choice. We had a music stall, dance stall, games stall, art and craft stall and the drama and story telling stall.I was a part of the dance stall.
First we had the “Chicken dance”followed by “If your happy and you know it”. After the two action songs we taught the kids a new song”Baby shark” with actions. They enjoyed it immensely. The girls and the boys were divided in the dance stall. The girls were obedient and they listened to us.They enjoyed everything we taught them, while the boys they only wanted to dance and they loved the Tapori style dance. They were full of energy and thoroughly enjoyed the dancing. The girls were enthusiastic about everything as well.
The game stall had games like football, kho-kho, kabbadi, etc. Art and craft stall gave the kids an opportunity to draw and paint. While the drama stall had the kids acting out skits or mimicking characters. The maximum response was received at the dance and music stall which was clubbed. The kids danced and sang their hearts out and never got tired.
At the end, all the kids came and said bye to us. Some of them came and gave me a hug and that made my day. I was stranger to them yet they made me feel like I belonged there. Overall it was a very eventful day and the energy that the kids showed brought a smile to each of our faces.
